Dec 11 Sammy's Woodfired Pizza, A Family Tradition

Does your family have any traditions? My family has one that involves pizza, so I'm not mad about it. We should probably ramp up the frequency now that I'm thinking about it...

Every year we visit Sammy's Woodfired Pizza for one of our birthdays or to celebrate a special occasion for a few different reasons. First, Sammy's has really good pizza. Secondly, they serve complimentary warm bread to begin the meal - who doesn't want ~~more carbs~~ free bread? Lastly, on your birthday, you receive a free 'messy sundae' and believe me, the name rings true (more on that later).

Birthday celebrations are better with ice cream (and pizza).

Let's start by talking about their pizza. I've had a couple different ones off the menu, and many of the same (seeing as our family enjoys tradition). My go-to's are the Garlic Chicken Pizza (pro tip - replace the chicken with shrimp - they used to have it on the menu but dropped it for some reason), Margherita, and Organic Arugula and Pear. All of Sammy's pies have a great crust, a little crispy on the outside but doughy on the inside. It's also on the thinner side, which I like. They did just introduce a couple new 'thin crust' items, so I'm wondering if these resemble more of a flatbread. Guess there is only one way to find out.

We sometimes do takeout so we can chill at home (and drink more wine).

Since our family always debates over which to order, we usually get a couple different pizzas. My mom doesn't do red sauce so the garlic chicken/shrimp is your best bet if you're wanting to avoid anything spicy or saucy.

One of my favorite's, the Arugula and Pear, is definitely different from your average pie. There are veggies and fruit on it, so it's my justification it's basically a salad. Am I right?

Our family also always orders the Balsamic Grilled Chicken Salad, and for a good reason, because it is bomb.com. The salad contains gorgonzola cheese so if you're sensitive to stinky cheeses, you'll want to avoid this one. But if you're like me and enjoy any cheese under the sun, then you will love this salad. It's simple and fresh, with lettuce, walnuts, grilled chicken (which is always cooked perfectly), basil and cheese.

I've died and gone to dessert heaven.

Finally, if you come to Sammy's and it's not someone's birthday, you better make a friend in the restaurant that's celebrating (or don't be cheap and order one) because the Messy Sundae is no joke and you'll want to eat the entire thing (except if you really did you would likely keel over from sugar overload, but I still think it would be worth it). This sundae sits in a huge wine glass, drenched in caramel and fudge, with a humungous scoop of ice cream in it, layered with more caramel and fudge, doused with whipped cream, sprinkled with some nuts with a cherry on top for the final garnish. I'm out of breathe just writing all of that. Order one already.

All in all, Sammy's is a great place to go in Southern California or Nevada if you're looking for a relaxed environment with delicious food and mouth-watering desserts.
