Trader Joe's Fall-Inspired Butternut Squash Pizza Crust Recipe
My Overall Rating = 🍕🍕🍕 (3/5)
Butternut squash pizza crust — yes, it’s a thing. I didn’t know it was a thing until I visited my local Trader Joe’s this weekend, but now I know, butternut squash pizza dough is a thing.
I’ve enjoyed butternut squash zoodles before, butternut squash ravioli (if you haven’t, you’re seriously missing out), and even had a butternut squash pasta sauce. But butternut squash pizza? When I saw Trader Joe’s had a Butternut Squash Pizza Crust — I had to try it! And obviously, make a butternut squash pizza recipe using it!
Now, you might recall, I had a mediocre experience when using Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Pizza Crust, so I went back and reviewed my post to see if there were any tips I left my future pizza-loving self. Turns out, there was. I made sure to cook both sides of the crust the maximum amount of time and even left it in a little longer after I piled on the ingredients. I also tried to keep the ingredient list as simple as possible. These tips were definitely useful and I’d recommend you do the same.
So try out this fall-inspired recipe featuring Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash Pizza Crust and let me know what you think! I’ll leave my thoughts bel0w. Enjoy!
Butternut Squash Pizza Recipe
Ingredients
12 spears of asparagus
1/3 red onion
1/2 red bell pepper
1/4 cup of shaved parmesan cheese
5 tablespoons of ricotta cheese
2 tablespoons of olive oil
Optional: Trader Joe’s balsamic glaze
Garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees
Chop all veggies
Place butternut squash pizza crust on a baking sheet (I lined mine with tinfoil — optional)
Lightly oil side of the crust facing up and bake for 10-12 minutes (I cooked it for 12!)
Flip the crust (mine broke when I did this, be careful when flipping it!)
Lightly oil the second side and return to the oven for another 10-12 minutes
Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a medium to large saucepan
Sauté veggies and season to your liking
Remove pizza crust from oven and sprinkle parmesan cheese on top
Put sautéed veggies on top of butternut squash pizza crust
Dollop ricotta cheese onto pizza
Change your oven setting to broil
Put the pizza with toppings back in the oven for 5-7 minutes
Take out of oven and drizzle balsamic glaze on top
Enjoy!
My final verdict? Meh. It was OK, but I won’t be making buying butternut squash pizza dough again anytime soon. Don’t get me wrong, I love gluten-free and alternative pizza crusts, but this crust didn’t thrill me. Since I cooked the crust a bit longer this time it wasn’t as mushy, which was nice, but I didn’t feel like I was eating a pizza. It left something to be desired. I’m bummed because I was really looking forward to adding a butternut squash pizza to my regular pizza-eating routine — but you win some, you lose some. I did love the other fresh and nutritious ingredients, so I may have to try this recipe on a regular dough another time.
